FreeFileSync Backup vs Sync: How to Keep Recoverable Copies

Quick answer

Synchronization aligns two folder states; a reliable backup also provides recovery from mistaken deletion, corruption and prior versions.

Understand the difference

Mirror can propagate deletions, Update can overwrite changed items, and Two Way can spread unwanted edits across both locations.

Add version history

Enable appropriate versioning or use an independent backup system that retains dated restore points.

Keep a separate copy

Store at least one recoverable copy that is not continuously modified by the synchronization job.

Test recovery

Restore sample documents to an alternate Windows folder and open them. A completed sync log is not enough to prove recoverability.

Before you run the job

Use disposable test folders for the first pass. Keep an independent copy of important files, confirm drive identities, and run Compare before Synchronize. A preview is not a substitute for checking the actual destination afterwards.
