FreeFileSync External SSD Backup Checklist for Windows 11

Quick answer

For an external SSD backup, confirm the correct drive, choose a reviewed one-way configuration, enable recovery protection and test a sample restore.

Prepare the destination

Check the SSD filesystem, free space, volume label and cable stability. Confirm the drive contains no only-copy files you might overwrite.

Choose and preview actions

Select the source and destination, run Compare and inspect planned additions, replacements and deletions before using Synchronize.

Protect previous versions

Use versioning or an independent history backup. Do not rely on one continuously connected SSD as the sole recovery point.

Verify after completion

Inspect the log, open sample files from the SSD, then restore one document to a separate test folder.

Before you run the job

Use disposable test folders for the first pass. Keep an independent copy of important files, confirm drive identities, and run Compare before Synchronize. A preview is not a substitute for checking the actual destination afterwards.
